The Spartanburg County School District Four Board of Trustees will seat four new members and welcome back trustee Tony Davis following Tuesday’s election.
Davis finished among the top five vote-getters to retain his seat. He will be joined on the board by Ted Harrison, Gary Lee, Jay Phillips, and Morgan Smith. David Sawyer and Charles Hembree did not tally enough votes to claim a seat. Hembree, an incumbent trustee, had previously withdrawn from the race, but his name still appeared on the ballot.
Preliminary results show Harrison as the top vote-getter with 571 votes, followed closely by Jay Phillips with 563, and Morgan Smith and Gary Lee with 549 votes each. Davis tallied 491 votes, and Sawyer received 250.
According to Spartanburg County, voter turnout was approximately 10 percent in the district, matching the 10 percent turnout countywide for school board and municipal elections. The results are unofficial until certified by the elections board, which is expected to meet tomorrow.
The newly elected members will be seated on the board of trustees at their meeting on December 6.
