The Woodruff Lady Wolverine volleyball team might be youthful, but a roster full of young and talented players learned from the best.
“Last year, we graduated seven seniors where the majority of them had been playing together since their sophomore year,” said Woodruff head coach Heather Abrams. “As a result, we are having to rebuild and reload in various positions. This year’s team is a great group to get that done.”
Coming off an 11-6 record, undefeated conference slate, and a top-8 finish in class 3A, Woodruff will lean heavily on that youth movement as they once again navigate a deep and talented Region III-3A that includes perennial contenders Chapman and Broome as well.
The Lady Wolverines’ varsity newcomers will need to grow quickly, but it is a confident group.
Among those assuming critical roles for the first time are middle blocker Jenna Guker and defensive specialist Jasmine Peneda. Setter Alivia Watts and outside hitter Grace Wireman will also be counted upon to make a significant impact.
Though youthful, there is also returning and talented experience as well.
Woodruff’s roster is bolstered by five seniors, including returning starters in right side hitter Emily Brown and outside hitter Haley West. Chasity Hines, Alexis Groomes, and Gabby Campos round out the senior class.
While only three starters return, Coach Abrams is ready to see what her team can do and is excited to watch them continue to learn and mature. She says great chemistry helps fuel the expectations for another run at a region championship and deep run into the state playoffs once again.
“(The team) already has a great comradery that will be beneficial in developing and strengthening team cohesion throughout the season,” she said. “We expect to compete for another Region III-AAA Championship and make a run in state playoffs.”
