Really? Plans to relocate the Woodruff Area Magistrate Court

Judge Vickie Rae Smith confirms plans are underway to relocate The Woodruff area Magistrate Court out of Woodruff to Reidville Road. The Magistrate Court is currently located at 231 East Hayne Street in Woodruff. With the projected growth in the City of Woodruff and the high prices of gas, some citizens are questioning why the move now, and why the move at all? Although the magistrate court provides services to citizens in Woodruff, parts of Enoree, and Cross Anchor, it also serves citizens up to the Union, Laurens, and Greenville county lines.

Locally, “many folks walk to court, and this court provides a lot of services to landlords and the general public,” said Judge Smith. To some citizens, the current location seems adequate for the number of citizens served by the court, and the cost of the current location seems more reasonable for taxpayers compared to the proposed new location. Most importantly, the physical location seems to provide increased accessibility to citizens in the Southern end of Spartanburg County. Councilman Justin McCorkle was unaware if the decision was made by County Council to relocate the Woodruff area Magistrate Court. Council McCorkle, said, “if it was a County Council decision, I am not aware of it.” McCorkle is looking into the decision to move the Woodruff Magistrate Court and will get back to The Woodruff Times when he has information to share. The next regularly scheduled Spartanburg County Council Meeting is Monday, May 16, 2022. The Main Council meeting is scheduled to start at 5:15 p.m. For more information about the meeting call the Spartanburg County Council Office at 864-596-2528.
