Jamie Guker, a veteran math teacher at Woodruff Middle School for 20 years, is a 2023 Teacher of the Year Finalist. S.C. State Superintendent Molly Spearman made a surprise visit to Woodruff Middle School (WMS) to make an official announcement and present Guker with a $10,000 check in front of her students. All of the students in the classroom were so excited for their teacher based on the YouTube video.

Scott Lawson, WMS principal, Dr. Rallie Liston, District Superintendent, and Tony Davis, Chairman of the Spartanburg School District Four Board of Trustees, were present for the presentation. According to the district website, “Guker works to motivate students while challenging them to become better mathematical thinkers. Her classroom is where many of the relationships begin. However, this is not where the relationships end! This approach to teaching and interacting with students earned her the honor of being selected as the 2021-2022 WMS Teacher of the Year and the 2021-2022 Spartanburg Four District Teacher of the Year.”

Guker’s next step in the 2023 Teacher of the Year award competition will include interviewing with a panel of education experts and attending the Teacher of the Year Gala in Columbia on May 4.
