Woodruff, SC- In a recent interview with The Woodruff Times, USMC Lt. Dylan Green shared his inspiring journey and passion for Space Systems Operations. Lt. Green’s exceptional academic background, coupled with his drive to explore the final frontier, has led him to play a significant role in the ever-evolving field of space exploration.

When asked about his interest in Space Systems Operations, Lt. Green attributed his fascination to his background in physics. With an undergraduate degree from The Citadel, Lt. Green initially thought his focus would be on Astrophysics and Astronomy. However, he found himself gravitating towards Atomic, Molecular, and Optical (AMO) Physics, exploring the effectiveness of electrodynamic capture and experimentation on ions.

Having previously served as a Supply Chain Management Officer, Lt. Green discovered a profound interest in the acquisitions side of Space Systems Operations. The merging of procurement and requisitions management, along with his deep passion for physics, made pursuing a career in this field a natural choice.

Lt. Green’s journey into Space Systems Operations began with his selection for the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS), a significant institutional investment for servicemembers. Similar to the Marine Enlisted to Commissioning Education Program (MECEP), the NPS offers officers the opportunity to acquire a master’s degree in a specific field, expanding their operational capabilities. Upon completion, the servicemember serves a three-year obligation related to their new Military Occupational Specialty (MOS).

Lt. Green’s interest in the 8866 Space Systems Operations Officer MOS developed during his time at The Basic School (TBS) in Quantico, Virginia. As the Marine Corps integrates satellite and counter-satellite operations into the battlespace, Lt. Green saw the potential for advancements in information and communication systems to enhance the Marine Air Ground Task Force.

Accepting the challenge, Lt. Green applied for the 8866 MOS as his second choice, with Contracting Officer (3006 MOS) as his initial preference. To obtain the 3006 MOS, he would have needed a master’s degree in Contracting from NPS. The selection board recognized Lt. Green’s undergraduate experience in physics and saw him as an ideal candidate for the 8866 MOS.

Throughout his journey, Lt. Green expressed gratitude for the unwavering support of his wife, who has been with him every step of the way since he commissioned. He acknowledged her instrumental role in making his dreams a reality.

When asked about encouraging more young people to pursue space careers through the military, Lt. Green emphasized the importance of competitiveness and individual determination. He encouraged aspiring space enthusiasts to strive for academic excellence and not settle for mediocrity. Lt. Green emphasized the dynamic nature of space integration and disruption of command and control systems, emphasizing the significance of space in modern conflicts.

Reflecting on lessons from his childhood, Lt. Green referred to the Bible passages Philippians 4 and Ecclesiastes 3, highlighting the value of embracing life’s seasons. He also shared his mother’s advice to “make them tell you no” and emphasized the importance of seizing every opportunity, applying for scholarships, and setting conditions to achieve desired goals.

A proud graduate of Woodruff High School, class of 2012, Lt. Green acknowledged the impact of his high school experience on his journey. Lt. Green stressed the significance of personal responsibility in pursuing dreams, stating that nobody will conduct the research or make decisions for one’s success. He highlighted the need for proactive engagement and personal drive to make aspirations a reality.

Lt. Green graduated from The Citadel in 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Physics. Despite being accepted into Clemson University for a Ph.D. program, he withdrew his application after receiving medical acceptance into the Marine Corps.

As Lt. Green continues his journey in Space Systems Operations, he serves as an inspiration for aspiring space enthusiasts, demonstrating that with determination and a passion for knowledge, the sky is not the limit—it’s just the beginning.
