Woodruff, June 28, 2023 – Perhaps the most poignant words at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Woodruff High School were uttered not by any of the dignitaries in attendance but by a young man out of a car window driving by the site on Highway 146 – “Go Wolverines!”.

School officials, board members, former board members, city council members, teachers, students, and parents all gathered on the future site of the new high school building on a sunny morning on June 28 to officially launch the construction of the new school.

“It’s a great time for Woodruff,” said Spartanburg County School District Four Board Chairman Tony Davis. He went on to commend the vision of Superintendent Dr. Rallie Liston for anticipating the continued growth in Woodruff and recommending the district look to the future to be prepared.

“His wisdom and foresight four years ago is one of the main reasons we are here today,” Davis said of Dr. Liston. “When he first came to us with the idea of a new school, I thought this man is out of his mind.” But, Dr. Liston’s eye to the future turned out to be accurate.

The new high school, which is expected to be ready for the start of the 2025 school year, was approved by Woodruff residents through a $100 million bond referendum in 2022. The school is expected to provide relief for all grades in the district as the district is expected to add hundreds of new students over the next several years.

Davis recognized the vision and willingness of the community as well.

“Most importantly, thanks goes out to the Woodruff community,” he said, recognizing the approval of the referendum. “It’s a great time for Woodruff.”

Dr. Liston followed by recognizing the importance of the facility and the intention going into planning and ultimately constructing the school.

“It’s about what is best for the students,” he said. “This groundbreaking represents the next chapter in our community’s commitment to providing quality education for generations to come.”

Dr. Liston also commended the community for its willingness to provide for the students of Woodruff.
“I am grateful to everyone who has worked so hard to make this dream a reality,” he said. “Especially to the many members of our community who have supported this project with their time, hard work, and resources.

“Dr. Liston then joined several dignitaries in turning the first shovels of dirt to commemorate the start of construction.
