Woodruff, June 27, 2023 – The BMW Group has marked a significant milestone in its commitment to electric vehicles (EVs) in the United States with the groundbreaking ceremony for its new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. The “Plant Woodruff” facility will play a crucial role in supplying fully electric BMW models produced at the nearby BMW Manufacturing plant in Spartanburg. The project is expected to create over 300 jobs initially, with further growth opportunities.
Ilka Horstmeier, a member of the Board of Management at BMW AG, responsible for human resources and real estate, expressed excitement about the company’s electric future in the United States. “Our new battery assembly plant in Woodruff will soon play an important role in our electric future here in the USA,” said Horstmeier. She also emphasized the expansion of BMW’s presence in South Carolina and the company’s commitment to preparing its workforce for the shift to EV production through the new technical training center at the Spartanburg plant. The center aims to equip BMW associates with the necessary skills and training to meet industry standards in EV manufacturing.
Dr. Robert Englehorn, President and CEO of BMW Manufacturing, added, “Today’s groundbreaking is the start of a new era at Plant Spartanburg as we prepare to produce fully electric BMW X models for the world.” Englehorn highlighted the sustainable and innovative features of the Woodruff facility, which will be state-of-the-art in terms of sustainability, flexibility, and digitalization.
The groundbreaking ceremony is part of BMW’s $1.7 billion investment in US operations, announced by BMW Group Chairman Oliver Zipse last October. This investment includes $1 billion allocated to prepare Plant Spartanburg for the production of fully electric vehicles and $700 million for constructing the new high-voltage battery assembly plant in Woodruff. The Woodruff facility, spanning over 1,000,000 square feet on 315 acres, will feature a technology building and support buildings such as a cafeteria, fire department, and energy center.
The state of South Carolina has welcomed BMW’s investment and the opportunities it brings. Governor Henry McMaster praised the groundbreaking, stating, “This new high-voltage battery assembly factory once again proves that South Carolina is a leader in the EV industry and further furthers our reputation as an automotive powerhouse.”As part of BMW’s “Local for Local” approach, the company will purchase battery cells for its electric vehicles from partner AESC, which is constructing a new 30 GWh battery cell factory in Florence, South Carolina. AESC will produce round lithium-ion battery cells specifically designed for the 6th generation of BMW’s eDrive technology. These new batteries are expected to increase energy density by over 20% and enhance charging speed and range by up to 30%. Moreover, the use of secondary lithium, cobalt, and nickel materials will reduce CO2 emissions during production by up to 60%.Sustainability is a key focus at “Plant Woodruff,” aligning with BMW’s philosophy of promoting environmental responsibility. The facility will operate without fossil fuels, utilizing 100% green electricity. The facility is designed to be “solar ready,” enabling the future installation of a rooftop solar photovoltaic (PV) system. Moreover, the Woodruff plant’s design incorporates various sustainable features, including high-energy efficiency, smart LED lighting, rainwater harvesting, and the use of innovative materials such as CO2-injected concrete and high-efficient electrical smart motors.
Since 1992, the BMW Group has invested nearly $12.4 billion in its South Carolina operations, solidifying its position as the largest BMW Group plant worldwide. With an annual production capacity of up to 450,000 vehicles and employing over 11,000 people, BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg plays a vital role in meeting global demand for BMW vehicles.
As BMW paves the way for a future of electric mobility, the groundbreaking of “Plant Woodruff” signifies another significant step forward in its commitment to sustainable manufacturing and its contribution to the EV industry in the United States. This milestone represents BMW’s dedication to the environment and promises substantial growth and opportunities for the city of Woodruff.
