What could have been a somber moment took on a more reverend feel as Woodruff Superintendent Dr. Rallie Liston presented the name plaque of Dr. Randy Grant to his wife Beth at the August school board meeting.
“He put his heart into this district and this community,” Dr. Liston said. “Thank you for sharing him with us.”
Dr. Grant passed away in May after being hit by a vehicle. As is tradition, when a member leaves the board, they are presented with their nameplate in recognition of their service. For Dr. Grant, the Board and Dr. Liston felt it appropriate to present the nameplate to his wife and family.
“Not only did he love this district, but he loved this Board,” Mrs. Grant told the group. “Thank you for everything you’ve done for us. We’ll never forget it.”
She was joined by several members of the Grant family to receive the recognition.
Dr. Grant was a 1966 graduate of Woodruff High School and taught in the district for several years. He also served as assistant principal at Woodruff Primary School. The school board voted in June to leave Dr. Grant’s seat open until the November elections.
In business proceedings, the Board voted to approve a revised timeline to a sewer agreement with the City of Woodruff for the new high school, changing the active date of the agreement to October 19.
The Board also approved the purchase of the main electrical switchboard for the new high school from Eaton for $111,000.
Facilities and Assistant Business Manager Clark Simpkins told the Board that it was important to order the equipment now as all bidders for the contract indicated at least a 52-week lead time on delivery. The part will be paid for using the bond funds approved by voters.
Woodruff School Board meetings are held on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the district office and are open to the public. Due to the Labor Day holiday, the next meeting will held on Monday, September 11.
