In a brief agenda; the Woodruff City Council approved the second reading of ordinances to annex and zone two parcels along Highway 101 for a new housing development.
Assistant City Manager Brandon McMahan told council members there were no changes to the requests from the first reading. The two parcels, located at Highway 101 and Hart Road, consist of just under 35 acres. The council approved the annexation and request to zone the parcels to R-2 single family.
In other old business, the Council also approved the second reading of a request to rezone a 0.8-acre parcel at 7 S.J. Workman Highway from R-3 multi-family residential to C-1 neighborhood commercial. McMahan explained that the building used to be a dentist’s office but was zoned to residential after the office closed. The new owner requested the zoning change to open a new dentist office at the location.
In new business, the Council approved a resolution to declare April as Fair Housing Month. The declaration is an annual event designed to bring awareness to various fair housing resources available in the area. Fair Housing Month is a program under the Housing and Urban Development Department and is connected to funding programs from the department.
In reports, McMahan told council members that the inaugural St. Patrick’s Day event was a success, attracting more than 600 people to downtown Woodruff. Mayor Kenneth Gist added that he had heard from several business owners that sales were up during the event, and they were very happy with the result.
The Woodruff City Council meets on the last Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. The meetings are open to the public, and the next meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, April 30.
