The Knox-Gifford household has welcomed an exciting new addition to their family: Mina Boyer, a 16-year-old junior from Réunion, an island department of France located in the Indian Ocean. Mina’s arrival has been a joyous experience for hosts Stephanie Knox and Dane Gifford, who describe the cultural exchange as both enlightening and heartwarming.
“Mina has seamlessly integrated into our daily routines, with the only major change being a trip to and from school each day,” Stephanie shared. The couple, who have been married for 14 years, have enjoyed watching Mina make friends and adapt to life in Woodruff. Recently, Mina attended her first prom, creating lasting memories with her new friends.
The transition from the volcanic landscapes of Réunion to the wintery climes of Woodruff has been significant. However, as spring turned to summer, Mina and her host family have embraced a variety of activities, including a skiing trip to Colorado and a visit to Washington D.C., where they enjoyed an NHL game.
“Mina’s independence has made her adjustment smooth,” Dane remarked. Woodruff High School’s welcoming environment has also played a key role in her integration. “She’s the second exchange student here in the last 10-20 years, and she found friends quickly.”
Mina’s culinary adventures have also delighted the household. “She tries everything and loves sushi,” Stephanie added with a laugh.
The Knox-Gifford family is cherishing every moment with Mina, from heartwarming everyday experiences to exciting travels and shared firsts, like raising baby chickens together. As Mina’s time in Woodruff draws to a close, the family reflects fondly on the memorable and enriching journey they’ve shared.
