Woodruff, a city with humble beginnings, marked a significant milestone this year as it celebrated its 150th anniversary. Established in 1874 with a modest population of just 200, Woodruff has seen remarkable growth over the past century and a half. By 2024, it proudly boasted a population of about 5,000 residents, with ambitious plans to extend to 18,000 by 2029.

This year, Woodruff’s community spirit and enduring resilience shone brighter than ever. The city recently received thrilling news that BMW Group would invest over $700 million to establish a high-voltage battery assembly plant along South Carolina Highway 101. This substantial investment marked the dawn of a new era of economic prosperity for Woodruff, promising job opportunities and enhanced growth.

In honor of this historic milestone, the city of Woodruff commemorated its 150th anniversary on June 28th by burying a time capsule. The celebration promised to be a memorable event, featuring live music and a spectacular fireworks display, creating lasting memories for the entire community.

In a heartfelt ceremony, Mayor Gist led the event, sharing poignant reflections on Woodruff’s rich history and optimistic future. “Today, we honor the foundation laid by our predecessors 150 years ago. As we celebrate our unity and progress, we cherish our past, uphold our values, and embrace innovation,” Mayor Gist said. “This time capsule, carefully curated, reflects our present and bridges our past with future generations.”

City Manager Lee Bailey also shared his insights on the city’s trajectory and future prospects:
Strategies for Population Growth: “The growth will occur naturally and will be based upon the demand for housing in our area,” Bailey stated, addressing the strategies being implemented to reach the projected population of 18,000 by 2029.

Economic Development Projects: “We have been fortunate to be able to add quality establishments each year, and I believe 2024 will be no different,” Bailey mentioned when discussing other economic development projects in the pipeline for Woodruff.

Time Capsule Contents: Bailey emphasized the importance of preserving history and cultural heritage. “Staff wanted to be able to preserve our history and also let the next generation understand the rich culture of our community. The items that were preserved were able to do that,” he explained.

Vision for the Future: When asked about his vision for Woodruff in the next 50 years, Bailey expressed his excitement about the city’s growth and new opportunities. “It is an exciting time to be in Woodruff. The growth and new opportunities are very exciting,” he said.

Rewarding Experience as City Manager: Reflecting on his tenure, Bailey shared, “The ability to help people and provide opportunities for them to grow. Nothing is better than being a part of someone’s life and seeing them grow professionally and personally.”

Message to Residents: Bailey had a heartfelt message for the residents as they celebrated this significant milestone: “When you look at 150 years of Woodruff, I would say to think back on all the memories made in our community and cherish those precious memories.”

Lee Bailey emphasized the importance of this day for the community. “It’s an incredible day to celebrate Woodruff’s 150 years. We have much to be thankful for, and there’s a lot of excitement and positive momentum for the future,” Bailey remarked. Bailey encouraged the children present to remember the day and to be a part of Woodruff’s future. “In 50 years, we hope you’ll come back and witness what happens with this time capsule.”

Throughout the year, Woodruff engaged in various activities to mark this milestone, including planting new landscaping and hosting concerts and events. As the council members ceremoniously lowered the time capsule into the ground, the community cheered, signifying their collective hope and pride for the city’s enduring legacy.

Mayor Gist: “Let us build on this foundation laid by those who came before us, striving to leave a legacy worthy of those who will follow. Long live Woodruff!”
