City Council Moves Forward Annexation, Zoning for Two New Developments

The Woodruff City Council approved the first reading for annexation and zoning of nearly 175 acres just north of town for two new developments.

The first includes several parcels of land along Fortenberry Road near Peanut Road totaling just under 144 acres, which is expected to become a new housing development. The owner has requested zoning of R-2 Single Family Residential. Staff indicated that the project has not yet submitted plans for the subdivision.
The second development will be for nearly 30.5 acres with frontage on Highway 221 near Peanut Road.

The owner has requested zoning of Planned Development, which would include commercial development on Highway 221 with residential behind that.

In old business, the Council approved the second reading of a request to rezone a 14-acre parcel on Poole Street Extension to R-3 Multi-Family Residential for future development. Staff expects the developer to submit a preliminary plan for the property at the next planning commission meeting.

The Council also approved amendments to the city’s code of ordinances to codify rules and restrictions to the solid waste collection and disposal section. The approval documents procedures the city has already been following, providing more protection to the city going forward.

Woodruff Police Chief Greg Ryan presented a request to adopt several revisions to the police department policies and procedures based on revisions to state policies. The updates are routine revisions the state recommends each year and, most often, are simple language changes. It is also required that the council reapprove all policies that were reviewed, though several had no changes.

City Manager Lee Bailey told the Council that the annual external audit had been completed in September. The auditor is expected to present the results at the November meeting. He also said the new playground equipment had been selected for the renovations in McKinney Park with construction expected to get started after the first of the year.

Woodruff City Council meetings are held on the last Tuesday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at City Hall. The meetings are open to the public, and the next meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 29.
