Board Approves Revisions to Drainage at New High School

The Spartanburg County School District Four Board of Trustees held a brief meeting in the wake of Hurricane Helene’s impact on the upstate, approving a $91,000 change order for the drainage at the new high school.

Superintendent Dr. Aaron Fulmer told the trustees that the change would be required to accommodate the future development of a sports complex at the school and that it made more sense to implement the change now. By making revisions now, the district will save some costs down the road by tying the work to existing work already being done.

The change order will be funded by $50,000 saved from an unsuitable soils mitigation project and funds from the contractor’s contingency fund. The project will not add additional costs.

In other business, the Board received the first reading regarding several policy changes staff is recommending. Each year, the South Carolina School Board Association makes policy recommendations that local districts then consider and, most often, implement into their policies. Staff presented 22 policies with recommended changes. The changes can range from a simple change in wording to implementing an entirely new policy.

Among the policies presented to the board, two are brand new policies regarding individual healthcare plans and the use of lifesaving medications. Two other policies are also being reviewed further before being brought to the Board for a first review in November. All but the two policies under further review are expected to be brought back to the Board in November for a second reading and approval.

With recovery from Helene still underway, there were no department presentations to the Board.

The District Four Board of Trustees meets on the first Monday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at the district office. The meetings are open to the public, and the next meeting will be held on Monday, November 11. The November meeting is a week later due to the district being closed for fall break and election day.
