Woodruff, SC (10/30/2024) – A routine morning turned into a nightmare for a local resident when a stranger armed with a nine-inch knife approached her home on Buncombe Street, leaving her shaken but unharmed. The victim, who lives alone, shared her terrifying experience as a reminder for residents to remain vigilant in their neighborhoods.
The encounter began when the woman noticed an unfamiliar man carrying a large bag, walking along her street and then entering her driveway. As he approached her porch, she politely asked him to leave her property multiple times, but he continued advancing, his right hand hidden in his pocket. Sensing danger, the woman quickly moved to the other side of her car, dialed 911, and took cover, all while trying to keep her distance.
Moments later, the man fell to the ground, speaking in a foreign language and banging his fists and head against the concrete. When officers arrived, a tense struggle ensued. Officer Coats, with the Woodruff Police Department, repeatedly ordered the man to remove his hand from his pocket, eventually discovering a nine-inch kitchen knife concealed within. The knife was promptly confiscated, and the man was taken into custody.
According to the police, the suspect is 41 year old, Martin Perez-Rodriguez. Mr. Perez-Rodriguez was taken to Spartanburg Regional where he was evaluated and then released into the custody of Officer Coats. He is currently being held at Spartanburg County Jail. He is being charged with public disorderly conduct.
The victim expressed gratitude for the swift police response, stating, “I’m thankful for Officer Coats and the immediate support I received. It’s unsettling to think this happened in Woodruff, but it’s a reminder for all of us to stay aware.”
Reflecting on the incident, she emphasized her determination to live without fear. “I won’t let this define how I feel about my home. I’m thankful to be safe and hope sharing my story encourages others to be cautious,” she said.
