For over 43 years, Rand Wilson has been a cornerstone of Woodruff’s business community, serving as the local State Farm agent since 1982. Wilson, who transitioned from a career in textiles to insurance during the 1980s, has built a reputation for dedication, community involvement, and fostering long-term relationships with his clients.

“I’ve realized the most rewarding part of my career is the friendships and loyalty I’ve built with my customers,” Wilson shared. His office has become more than a place to handle insurance needs—it’s a hub where stories, milestones, and community connections are shared.

Originally from South Carolina, Wilson began his career in the textile industry, a field that dominated the region in the mid-20th century. “The textile industry was declining in the early 80s, and I was looking for something I might enjoy doing long-term,” he recalled. After years of interviews, State Farm offered him the opportunity to open an agency in Woodruff.

That decision proved to be pivotal. Since then, Wilson has witnessed significant changes in the insurance industry, including the introduction of computers. “I was the first State Farm agent in South Carolina to get a computer,” Wilson said. “It’s amazing to see how technology has evolved, from microfiche to instantaneous internet updates.”

While technology has streamlined some processes, Wilson noted that it has also brought challenges. Despite the hurdles, Wilson and his team have adapted to new regulations, compliance requirements, and evolving insurance products, ensuring they stay ahead in a competitive industry.

Today, Wilson’s office employs four licensed agents, a significant growth from the two staff members he started with. “The industry has changed so much—it’s not just auto and home insurance anymore. We handle life, health, securities, and more, which requires continuous education and training.”

Beyond his professional achievements, Wilson is deeply embedded in the Woodruff community. Over the years, he has supported local schools, sports teams, and events like the Christmas parade. His contributions have not gone unnoticed—Wilson and former mayor Gerald Craig were once honored as Co-Citizens of the Year by the Woodruff Area Council.

As Woodruff experiences a period of rapid growth, Wilson has a unique perspective on the town’s evolution. “When I started in 1982, Woodruff was on a downward trend with the closure of the mills. It stayed that way for a long time,” he said. “But in the last few years, the growth has been incredible. In another five years, Woodruff will look completely different.”

Despite the industry’s challenges and the town’s growth, Wilson has no plans to retire. “I enjoy meeting people and being part of their big life moments,” he said. “From weddings to new homes, I get to share in their milestones.”

Looking ahead, Wilson remains optimistic about the role of local agents in an increasingly digital world. “Artificial intelligence and call centers may be convenient, but nothing replaces the value of a face-to-face conversation with someone you trust,” he said.

Rand Wilson’s journey from textiles to a decades-long career in insurance is a testament to adaptability, resilience, and a deep commitment to community. As Woodruff continues to grow, one thing remains constant—Wilson’s dedication to serving the people who make this town home.
