March is Red Cross Month! President Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the first proclamation in 1943. “Red Cross Month is a special time to honor American Red Cross employees, volunteers, partners, donors and community heroes who make our vital mission possible,” American Red Cross SC Region Team.
The American Red Cross in South Carolina is actively working to reduce home fire risks through education, smoke alarm installations, training, and community engagement. With home fires being the nation’s most common disaster, the Red Cross emphasizes prevention and preparedness to save lives.
The Home Fire Safety Campaign educates families about fire hazards and provides free smoke alarms for homes that lack them. Through the Sound the Alarm initiative, volunteers install smoke alarms, share fire safety tips, and raise funds to support families affected by fires.
The Red Cross offers training courses in first aid, CPR, AED use, water safety, and babysitting—essential skills that empower individuals to respond effectively in emergencies.
To prevent home fires, the Red Cross advises:
- Keeping at least three feet of space around all heating equipment
- Testing smoke alarms monthly
- Practicing a two-minute home fire escape plan with family members
The American Red Cross invites volunteers to install smoke alarms, assist affected families, or help with fire recovery efforts.
