A military memorial stands as a powerful testament to the sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served in the United States Armed Forces. It serves not only as a place of reflection but also as a symbol of unity, ensuring that the stories of these heroes are never forgotten.
The Woodruff Veterans Memorial Committee is working diligently to honor local veterans through a dedicated memorial project. As part of this initiative, the committee is inviting veterans, as well as their families and friends, to submit photos and names for inclusion in a special veterans’ collage. According to Brian Richards, co-chair of the committee, there is no cost to participate.
“We currently have 120 veterans in the collage, but there’s room for many more,” Richards stated. “All veterans from Woodruff, Enoree, Crescent, Cross Anchor, and surrounding areas are encouraged to be part of this tribute. Even if a veteran no longer resides in the area but once lived or attended school here, they are still welcome.”
With Woodruff experiencing rapid growth, new veterans moving into the community are also encouraged to participate. Both living and deceased veterans can be included in the collage, making it a meaningful representation of the area’s military service across generations.
The veterans memorial project is spearheaded by a dedicated committee of veterans, ensuring the initiative stays mission-focused. One of the committee’s most urgent needs is financial support to complete the project as planned. Donations are tax-deductible, as the Woodruff Veterans Memorial Project operates as a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization.
The memorial, to be built in McKinney Park, will be a lasting tribute to all who have served and an inspiration to future soldiers from the community. Fundraising efforts are currently focused on constructing the memorial’s floor and retaining walls. A later phase will include approximately 2,000 or more bricks, which veterans, families, and friends can purchase to honor a veteran. Additional fundraising opportunities will be listed on the website.
For more information on how to submit a veteran’s photo, donate, or participate in meetings, visit http://www.wdfvets.org or contact Brian Richards at 803-719-3095. The committee meets monthly at 134 S. Main Street in downtown Woodruff, and all who are interested in supporting the project are welcome to attend.
Through this initiative, the Woodruff Veterans Memorial Committee ensures that the courage and dedication of local veterans are forever honored and remembered.
