The deadline for obtaining a REAL ID is just one month away, and South Carolina officials are urging residents—especially those with summer travel plans—to take action now to avoid potential delays at airports or federal facilities.
Beginning May 7, 2025, all travelers will be required to present a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license or ID card—identified by a gold star in the top right corner—when boarding domestic flights, entering federal buildings, or accessing military installations.
“We expect to be very busy in the coming month as those with summer travel plans try to get ready,” said Kevin Shwedo, Executive Director of the South Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles. “People will need to come with some patience as we take care of everyone we can around the deadline.”
Though the SCDMV has been issuing REAL ID-compliant cards since 2018, nearly one million South Carolinians still do not have one. Currently, about 62 percent of state-issued licenses and ID cards meet the federal requirements.
Those without a REAL ID who plan to travel or access secure federal locations after May 7 will need to present an alternative form of identification, such as a valid U.S. passport or active-duty military ID.
A REAL ID is not required for driving, voting, or general identification, but it will be necessary if residents want to use their state-issued license or ID to fly or access federal sites. A REAL ID-compliant driver’s license costs $25 and is valid for up to eight years.
For those seeking a state ID card:
Ages 17 and older: free for first-time or renewal
Ages 5–16: $15 fee

With the deadline fast approaching, state officials are urging residents not to delay. Taking steps now can ensure smooth travel and prevent headaches during the busy summer season.
