With the love of music in her heart and the support of her family, Adylyn Allen-Gadson, a 6th grader at Beech Springs Middle School, traveled to Dallas, Texas, to participate in the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Conference—an unforgettable experience for this rising vocal talent.
Adylyn, daughter of Christopher and Angelica Allen-Gadson, was selected to perform in the National Honor Choir after recording an audition song with her chorus teacher, Ms. Millie Shiflett, last September. In late October, the family received the exciting news that she had been chosen to join students from across the country at the national conference in March 2025.
“I was a little nervous. I wasn’t sure how things were going to be,” Adylyn shared, “but I was mostly excited.” When asked what the highlight of the trip was for her? Adylyn said, “Practicing the songs with all the other participants.”

Her parents, who drove to Dallas from Duncan, South Carolina, said the trip was more than just a conference—it was a meaningful family adventure. “It was an amazing experience because we were able to spend quality time with our daughter while visiting states we hadn’t been to before,” said Angelica.
Attending the conference was not free. The Allen-Gadson family had to cover all of the expenses for the trip. They expressed their gratitude for the support they received from family and friends, who helped cover the full cost of the trip—including registration for the conference, hotel, and transportation. When asked what would she and her husband share with other parents about paying for field trips for their children, they said, “Please encourage your child to take opportunities that allow them to travel. Enjoy every moment with them and remind them that many more doors can open with hard work.”
From a desire to visit Texas to being selected among 320 student vocalists representing nearly every state, Adylyn’s journey has not only inspired her but also encouraged her to continue pursuing music. She will be recognized at an upcoming Spartanburg District 5 School Board meeting for her outstanding achievement.
“This opportunity was truly special,” said Angelica. “It’s only the beginning for Adylyn.”
The Allen-Gadson family are long-time members of Mount Alexander Baptist Church in Woodruff.
