High on Life: Chocolate?

Sherry Powers was my church friend and neighbor. When her Daddy was transferred by Southern Railway to St. George, South Carolina, I visited her and once rode the train all by myself from the depot on Magnolia Street in Spartanburg.

The beach was not far from their home, and I went overnight with their family of five. When we returned the following evening, Mrs. Powers lined us up and gave each of us a small chocolate. Sherry said her mother always did this when they went out of town.

We had to scrub the bathroom every day with Ajax. Later, I thought I understood the significance of the tiny chocolate and thought I understood why we had to scrub the bathroom every day. Sherry said, “Nope, that’s not it. Mama always makes us scrub the bathroom every day, whether we go out of town or not”.

Have you experienced mistaken ingredient identity? Have you used salt instead of sugar or baking powder instead of baking soda? Please share your disaster story and the right outcome by entering The Woodruff Times Recipe Competition. We cannot wait to read your story and have a good old-fashioned belly laugh.
