When we were in elementary school, we rarely ate out, although we went to the Beacon as a treat. Daddy always ordered the flounder plate, and Mother preferred the baked ham sandwich with lettuce and tomato. I have forgotten what Doug liked, but I enjoyed a gooey toasted pimento cheese sandwich or occasionally had a couple of chicken legs.
As very young children, sometimes we went out to ride around in the cool air. We loved pleasant evenings going to the Beacon and only having Orange Crush. They sat in amber brown ribbed bottles sweating on a metal tray hung onto Daddy’s green and white ’55 Buick’s rolled down window. We would laugh and chant, “Rush, Rush for Orange Crush”.
Memories are tied to food and also tied to places. We had many picnics at Rainbow Lake and sometimes only took a watermelon to share after we swam.
