Spartanburg, S.C. — A jewel of Spartanburg’s past and present has been nationally recognized for its spirit of warm hospitality. Built in 1913, Clevedale Historic Inn and Gardens stands as Spartanburg’s only historic estate venue offering overnight accommodations — and today, it shines as one of the 20 Friendliest Places in the South for 2025, according to Southern Living.

Known for its breathtaking gardens and timeless charm, Clevedale has become a beloved destination for weddings, family reunions, concerts, business retreats, and even film productions. More than a venue, it is a place where life’s most meaningful moments unfold.

Owners Pontheolla and Paul Abernathy purchased the estate in 2012, pouring vision and heart into transforming it into a retreat that welcomes guests from across the globe. Many visitors return year after year, drawn not only by the beauty of the grounds but by the genuine warmth they encounter.

Beyond hosting leisure travelers, Clevedale has become a hub for the community, recently welcoming OneSpartanburg Inc.’s PowerUp Mentor to Mentor meeting, which supports the growth of small businesses across the Upstate.

In a heartfelt message of gratitude, the Abernathys thanked their guests and community: “You continue to help us create a place that feels like home. Come experience the warmth, charm, and hospitality for yourself. The Heart of Hospitality at Clevedale.”
