BLT

During the summer of 1971, I would often cut through the woods and take a break between classes at Spartanburg Methodist College. I drove a couple of miles to The Steeple Drive-In on Highway 29. I ordered a bacon, lettuce, and tomato sandwich with extra mayonnaise. When it arrived, it was on a soft, warm hamburger bun. I was pleasantly surprised, and it was great – the best, short of Mama’s on white toast.
In the peace of my little car, I thanked the Good Lord for my food and for giving me the strength to work, go to school, and for keeping me safe and sane.
