Max Metcalf of Greenville County has been named chairman of the South Carolina Department of Transportation (SCDOT) Commission. The appointment was made during the Commission’s meeting on Jan. 15, 2026, in Columbia.
Metcalf said he is honored by the vote of confidence from his fellow commissioners and emphasized the importance of transportation to the state’s future.
“Our state’s transportation system is the backbone of South Carolina’s economy and quality of life,” Metcalf said. “Together, we’ll continue building momentum to connect people, support jobs, and strengthen our state for generations to come.”
Metcalf currently serves as manager of government and community relations at BMW Manufacturing. He was appointed to the SCDOT Commission in May 2022, representing South Carolina’s 4th Congressional District.
A 1986 graduate of Clemson University, Metcalf earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. His public service and policy background spans several decades, including roles as director of transportation and intergovernmental relations in the office of former Gov. Carroll A. Campbell Jr., district administrator for former U.S. Rep. Bob Inglis, and vice president of public policy for the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce. He joined BMW in 2001.
Metcalf has held numerous leadership positions across the state, including past chairman of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, and the Upstate South Carolina Alliance. He also serves as secretary-treasurer of South Carolina Charities Inc., which operates the BMW Charity Pro-Am presented by TD SYNNEX, and is a member of AdvanceSC.
In recognition of his service to the state, Metcalf received the Order of the Palmetto in 1993.
