The Woodruff girls’ basketball team knows how to stuff a stat sheet.
On Friday against Mountain View Prep, the Lady Wolverines gave Mountain View Prep a first-hand demonstration.
Senior Jensyn Turner lead four Woodruff players in double digits and the Lady Wolverines led wire-to-wire in a 62-32 win that improved the team to 3-0 in region play.
The hot shooting started with freshman Ella Flack who scored eight of her 10 points in the first quarter, including knocking down two three-pointers, as Woodruff built a 21-13 lead. That margin expanded in the second quarter with Jasmine McKnight chipping in with two buckets, along with junior guard Jaylen Means whose defensive prowess led to easy layups on the other end.
Turner also added seven points in the second quarter, and as the night progressed, her stat line grew ever-more impressive.
Despite a cold start to the third, Woodruff closed the quarter strong and built their lead to 49-28. In the fourth, they slammed the door on the Stars and left little doubt as to who the best team was.
Turner finished the night with a team-high 13 points and 11 assists to go along with eight steals and six rebounds. Her eight steals tied Turner with Sateria Jeter for the all-time program record. Jensyn would break the record in the Lady Wolverines’ next contest against Chapman.
Means scored 12 points to go along with eight steals and eight rebounds in a near triple-double. McKnight added 11 points and 13 rebounds, while Flack chipped in with 10 and six steals, her third consecutive double-digit scoring game.
Sophomore guard Amiria Jackson also had her best game to date, scoring a season-high seven points.
Woodruff head coach Jon Jansen was extremely pleased with his team’s effort and intensity.
“Friday nights in Woodruff are always special and we tell the ladies how special that moment is,” he said. “Tonight, our ladies played with poise while defending well in stretches.”
Boys: MVP 51, Woodruff 38
On an atypically cold shooting night for the Woodruff boys, the Wolverines fell to the Stars 51-38.
Despite building an early 12-7 lead after one quarter, Woodruff went cold in the second period while struggling with foul trouble as MVP took a 19-16 lead into halftime of the low-scoring game.
The Stars upped their lead to 33-24 going to the fourth quarter, and thought Woodruff rallied to within 36-30 with just over four minutes to play, the Wolverines were unable to close the gap further as they fell to 8-7 and 2-1 in region play.
Jackson McCarley led Woodruff with 13 points and Dre Jenkins added 10. Grayson Patterson chipped into the effort with seven points and 13 rebounds.
