Balancing Growth and Agricultural Preservation
As economic development continues to accelerate across Spartanburg County, Representative Bill Chumley is emphasizing the importance of protecting local agriculture and preserving farmland for future generations. Chumley, who serves as chair of the Agriculture Subcommittee of the House Agriculture Committee, has recently hosted several town hall meetings aimed at supporting farmers and addressing the challenges they face in a rapidly changing economy.
Agriculture’s Role in Spartanburg County’s Heritage and Economy
During these discussions, Chumley highlighted the need for balanced growth, noting that while economic development brings new opportunities, it must not come at the expense of the county’s farming communities. He stressed that agriculture remains a vital part of Spartanburg County’s heritage and economy.
Calls to Protect Farmland for Future Generations
“We have to support our farmers and the acreage needed to farm,” Chumley said, urging residents to recognize the long-term value of preserving agricultural land. He explained that protecting farmland is essential not only for local food production but also for maintaining the county’s rural character and economic diversity.
Community Awareness and Policy Will Shape the Future
As development pressures continue to rise, Chumley said community awareness and policy decisions will play a critical role in ensuring farmers can continue operating successfully while Spartanburg County grows.
