Weekly Woodruff Sports Roundup: Wolverines Continue to Shine as Season Heats Up

WOODRUFF, S.C. — The Woodruff spring sports teams continue to impress as the season advances deeper into March. With three weeks behind them, the Wolverines have already provided many exciting moments and personal accomplishments on the field, court, and track.

Here is a look back at the week that was for Woodruff High School sports.


Boys Soccer Remains Undefeated

The Wolverine boys’ soccer team remained undefeated with a pair of victories against Clinton and Palmetto. Woodruff defeated the Red Devils 8-0 before holding on in a thriller against the Mustangs, 4-3, last Friday.

Against Clinton:

  • Carlos Garcia scored two goals and added three assists
  • Eric Perez scored two goals
  • Six different players scored for Woodruff

Against Palmetto:

  • Santi Ramirez recorded a hat trick, scoring three of the team’s four goals

With the victories, Woodruff improves to 5-0 on the season as they work toward a third region championship in the last four seasons.


Girls Soccer Takes Two

The Lady Wolverines finished the week 2-1, highlighted by:

  • A 6-1 victory over 3A #7-ranked Newberry
  • A 2-0 shutout over Travelers Rest

Top performances included:

  • Kaelyn Glass (3 goals vs. Newberry)
  • Ella Flack, Kennedy Scruggs, and Glass each contributing assists

Woodruff fell to 5A powerhouse Hillcrest in their final game of the week, bringing their record to 5-3-1.


Barnaby Sets Stolen Base Record

Woodruff senior shortstop Kayden Barnaby became the school’s all-time leader in stolen bases during Friday’s game against Fox Creek.

  • Tied the record after a single and stolen base
  • Broke the record with two steals in the seventh inning
  • Now holds 60 career stolen bases

Barnaby surpassed the previous record held by current assistant coach Nemo Cochran.


Woodruff Baseball Wins Big at Fifth Third Park

The Wolverines earned a big win Saturday, defeating Landrum 15-6 at Fifth Third Park in Spartanburg.

Game highlights:

  • Woodruff led 14-0 after three innings
  • 15 total team hits
  • Multi-hit games from Kayden Barnaby, Cohen Long, and Luke Cooper
  • Jackson Richard, Kaden Henderson, and Long each recorded three RBIs

Barnaby started on the mound, allowing just three hits and striking out four over three innings.

Woodruff improves to 4-4 on the season.


🏃 Track Teams Win Season Opener

Both the boys’ and girls’ track and field teams finished first at their opening meet at Chapman High School, competing against Chapman, Broome, and Blue Ridge.

Boys Highlights:

  • Nathan McConnell — 1st place (pole vault)
  • Malachi Thompson — 1st place (100m)
  • Landon Johnson — 2nd place (100m)
  • Aiden Gibson — 1st place (200m)
  • Skylar Barker — 1st place (400m)

Girls Highlights:

  • Alexis Easterling — 1st place (100m)
  • Sydnee Cothran — 1st place (1600m)
  • Bellashea Schulz — 1st place (400m hurdles)
  • McKenzie Bivens — 1st place (shot put)

Golf Takes Two Region Wins

The Wolverine golf team defeated Greer Middle College Charter and Union County in a Region 3-3A tri-match, taking an early lead in conference standings.

Top scores included:

  • Addison Davis — 41
  • Jackson McCarley — 41
  • Evan Smith — 40

Woodruff is now 2-1 on the season, with three matches scheduled this week.


Woodruff High School athletics continue to build momentum across multiple sports as the spring season progresses, showcasing both team success and individual achievements.
