Spring Break Brings Pause to Busy Week of Action

We have reached spring break! A much-needed rest has arrived for Woodruff’s spring sports athletes, but several teams finished with a flurry before the calendar turned to April. With a week off taking place for Woodruff’s teams, here is a look back at all the action to conclude the week that was.


Girls Soccer Blasts Union County

The Lady Wolverine soccer team routed Union County last Friday, 8-1, to improve to 10-4-1 on the season and 4-1 in region play. It was a complete team effort for the Lady Wolverines with seven different players scoring goals. Eviya Pankovets led the way with two goals. Raegan Putnam, Kaelyn Glass, Dakota Luby, Neleh Miller, Ava Kate Tucker, and Abbee Lynn also scored for Woodruff.Glass also added two assists.


Boys Soccer Keeps Rolling with Blowout of Yellow Jackets

The Woodruff boys’ soccer team continued to dominate last Friday with an 8-0 win over Union County. It was the sixth shutout of the season in 12 games for the Wolverines, who improved to 11-1 overall and 4-1 in region play. Carlos Garcia scored four goals for Woodruff. Santiago Ramirez added two goals and an assist, while Max Perez assisted on two goals as well. Camlin Durelle and Joan Cortes each scored a goal for the Wolverines.


Woodruff Baseball Drops Two Heartbreakers

The Woodruff baseball team ran into hard luck in the final two games of their three-game series versus Chapman. The Wolverines dropped game two by a score of 8-5 before falling at home in the rubber game of the series, 8-7, on Friday night. In Friday’s game, Kayden Barnaby, Jackson Richard, and Kaden Henderson each recorded two hits. Freshman Zeke Dickard pitched well, allowing just two earned runs and five hits in five innings on the mound. The Wolverines have the entire week off before hosting Mountain View Prep after the break.


Softball Falls to Union County

The Woodruff softball team fell to powerhouse Union County, 9-2, on Friday. The Lady Wolverines hope to get back on track following spring break and make some noise in Region 3-3A as the postseason draws closer.


Golf Competes Well in County Tournament

The Woodruff golf team finished fifth overall out of 16 teams in the Spartanburg County tournament. The Wolverines were led by Wyatt McCarley, who shot a 77, and Addison Davis, who shot 79. Following the county tournament, Woodruff competed in the Blazer Open at Fort Jackson Golf Club and finished second in the purple division. In the Blazer Open, Jackson McCarley shot a solid 79, and Wyatt McCarley posted an 83. Like all other teams, Wolverine golf will take the week off before returning to action.


Woodruff Track Teams Compete in Dorman Meet

The Woodruff track and field team competed last week at the Dorman High School meet against the host Cavaliers, High Point Academy, and Wade Hampton.

On the boys’ side, Skylar Barker finished second overall in the 400-meter race and Wes Newsome third overall in the 800-meter.Sam Ringold and Aidan Lawson finished third and fifth, respectively, in the 1,600-meter race, and Jackson Mathews finished fourth in the 3,200.

In the pole vault, Nathan McConnell finished second overall. Dawson Clevenger and Daniel Haas finished second and third in the shot put, with Haas coming in third overall in discus.

For the Lady Wolverines, Alexis Easterling finished second in the 200-meter and 400-meter races with respective times of 27.12 and 1:03.80.

Sydnee Cothran finished first overall in the 1,600-meter race with a time of 5:45.19, with Zoey Jane Lawson placing third in the 3,200. Bellashea Schulz finished second in the 400-meter hurdles.

Callie Adams placed second in pole vault with a jump of 9’6”.McKenzie Bivens also finished second in shot put with a throw of 9.55 meters. Alexis Baldwin took the top spot on the podium in the javelin throw with a distance of 27.9 meters.

Overall, both Woodruff teams finished second overall to Dorman, with victories over High Point Academy and Wade Hampton to cap another strong showing in what has been a very successful season so far.


Boys Tennis Takes Two

The Woodruff boys’ tennis team had a solid week, finishing 2-1 overall. The Wolverines defeated 5A Hillcrest and Broome before dropping a hard-fought non-region match to powerhouse Clinton. The tennis squad has steadily improved throughout the season, and with the play-offs approaching, is looking to make some noise in the 3A bracket.
