In 2020, the Class of 2023 at Woodruff High School experienced a profound loss with the unexpected passing of their dear friend and teammate, Jamaya LaShaye Smith. Jamaya’s infectious smile and kind-hearted nature left a lasting impact on her friends and teammates. Now, as they prepared for their high school graduation, three classmates, Alivia Watts, Alli Burnette, and Layla Grey Bennett, decided to pay tribute to Jamaya’s memory in a unique and unprecedented way.

While previous classes had also suffered the loss of classmates, none had taken the initiative to advocate for their fallen friends to be honored during graduation. Recognizing this, these remarkable young ladies embarked on a mission to obtain approval from the principal, superintendent, and school board members to reserve an empty seat in Jamaya’s honor. To gather support for their cause, they utilized the power of social media, rallying the community behind them.

Thanks to the overwhelming support they received, an empty chair was placed in alphabetical order, symbolizing where Jamaya would have been seated had she been present. Though unbeknownst to many attendees, this small gesture held great significance for the graduates and Jamaya’s family.

Expressing her gratitude in a heartfelt Facebook post, Jamaya’s mother, Ola Smith, attended the graduation ceremony accompanied by several family members. Pictures from the event captured Jamaya’s loved ones wearing custom-made t-shirts adorned with joyful images of her. Following the ceremony, family and friends gathered on the field to celebrate together. Ola shared, “All of her siblings made a challenge that they will graduate for Jamaya.” Clearly, this was an incredibly special occasion.

The actions taken by these young advocates exemplify that education encompasses more than classroom lessons and textbooks. It encompasses cherished friendships and enduring memories that shape a lifetime.

Witnessing the determination and knowledge-driven advocacy of these young leaders serves as a testament to the transformative power of education. As they prepare to embark on their college journeys in the fall, Alivia plans to major in pre-law at USC Upstate, Alli intends to pursue nursing at Anderson University, and Layla Grey aspires to study Physical Education at Southern Wesleyan University. Armed with a valuable education and treasured memories of their time, friendships, and accomplishments at WHS, they will undoubtedly leave a lasting impact.

Reflecting on the Class of 2023, Dr. Rallie Liston, Spartanburg School District Four Superintendent, described them as “quite a remarkable class.” Indeed, their advocacy and unity have left an indelible mark on the history of Woodruff High School, reminding us of the power that lies within the bonds forged during our educational journey.
