U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon visited the Upstate recently to promote the launch of the Presidential 1776 Award, a new national scholarship competition aimed at strengthening high school students’ understanding of American history, civics, and the nation’s founding principles.

“Our nation’s freedom depends on future generations who understand and appreciate its history,” McMahon said. “The Presidential 1776 Award challenges students to engage deeply with the ideas that shaped our country.”

Launched by the U.S. Department of Education, the competition is open to students in grades 9–12 and will feature multiple rounds of testing, regional semifinals, and a national final in Washington, D.C. Top-performing students will be eligible for scholarships totaling up to $250,000.

The initiative is part of a broader national effort leading up to the 250th anniversary of the United States, encouraging academic excellence and civic literacy through a rigorous yet engaging format that highlights the nation’s founding ideals.

Joining McMahon during the visit were South Carolina Superintendent of Education Ellen Weaver and South Carolina native and businessman Van Hipp, both of whom expressed support for the program’s focus on civic education.

The United States will mark its Semi quincentennial with celebrations and educational initiatives through July 4, 2026, commemorating 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence in 1776.
