South Carolina residents who want to participate in upcoming elections have several convenient options for registering to vote. State election officials encourage eligible citizens to register early to ensure they are prepared when Election Day arrives.
Who Is Eligible to Register?
To register in South Carolina, a person must:
- Be a U.S. citizen
- Be at least 18 years old by the next election
- Be a resident of the county where they plan to vote
- Not be currently serving a sentence for a felony conviction
- Not be declared mentally incompetent by a court
Ways to Register to Vote
There are three primary ways residents can register:
1. Online Registration
Online registration is available through the South Carolina Election Commission website. This option requires a valid South Carolina driver’s license or state-issued identification card and an updated address with the Department of Motor Vehicles.
2. Register by Mail
Residents can download a voter registration form, complete it, and send it to their county voter registration office by mail, fax, or email.
3. Register In Person
Citizens may also register in person at their county voter registration and elections office or at certain government agencies such as the Department of Motor Vehicles.
Important Deadline
South Carolina law requires voters to register at least 30 days before an election to participate in that election.
