It takes too long to arrive, and all too soon it is over. Each school year brings excitement for the sports seasons that coincide with the classroom curriculum. The 2025-26 school year in Woodruff was full of exciting wins, individual accomplishments, and moments that defined another successful year on the fields, courts, and track. Take a look back at eight shining moments that helped define the year that was for Woodruff High School Athletics.
Football Returns to Region Dominance
The Woodruff football team returned to region dominance during the 2025 season, capturing the conference championship for the first time since 2015. It was a banner year for the Wolverines, who finished 11-2 behind running back Aiden Gibson, quarterback Connor Davis, tight end Kam Taylor, receivers Kori Moates and Curtis Bell, while shutting down opponents with a stifling defense led by Shaun ‘War Daddy’ Graybill, Jordan Hood, Adrian Hill, Travon Lee, Jackson McCarley, and Malachi Thompson.
Gibson Threatens Woodruff Rushing Record
Woodruff, a 4-star running back and recent Penn State commit, Aiden Gibson made a run for the records during the 2025 football season. Gibson, who finished his junior season just 448 yards shy of the Wolverines’ all-time career rushing mark, did become Woodruff’s all-time career leader in all-purpose yards. He also finished just one yard short of the single-game rushing record of 312, racking up 311 yards during Woodruff’s 40-37 second-round playoff win over Christ Church. With his senior season upcoming, more records could, and should, fall for Gibson and the high-octane Wolverine offense.
Jensyn Turner Shatters Basketball Record Book
Senior point guard Jensyn Turner finished rewriting the Lady Wolverines’ basketball record book as a senior. The Southern Wesleyan signee finished her career as the fifth all-time leading scorer for Woodruff in the modern era (post 1971) and sixth overall, set the career and single season records for assists and steals, and finished with the second most three-point shot makes for a career in school history. A member of the varsity team since seventh grade, Turner overcame a devastating knee injury that caused her to miss her sophomore season and record one of the best careers in the history of the program, which will undoubtedly earn her a future place in the Woodruff Athletic Hall of Fame.
Coach Jon Jansen Sets Modern Era Wins Record
Woodruff girls’ basketball coach Jon Jansen became the winningest coach of the modern era, guiding the Lady Wolverines to a 14-11 record during the 2025-26 season. Coach Jansen has led Woodruff since 2018 and has amassed 124 wins over eight seasons. He tied Liz Nickle for the modern era wins record on January 30 in a 67-24 win over Greer Middle College and surpassed the mark on February 4 during the Lady Wolverines’ 46-32 win over Broome.
Amazing Play-off Run Leads to District Title for Woodruff Baseball
The Woodruff baseball team treated fans to a remarkable playoff run after finishing fourth in Region 3-3A, winning the district championship over St. Joseph’s Catholic before advancing to the upper-state championship round, where they also defeated Christ Church to earn a spot in the final six in Class 3A. While finishing the season with a 16-17 record, the Wolverines caught fire in the final two weeks of the season and stunned St. Joseph and Palmetto in the district round before ultimately falling to defending state champion Southside Christian and Chapman in the upper-state bracket. Multiple records were set by the Woodruff baseball team and its players, with those marks still being calculated, but the season’s finish will be a lasting memory given by a team that refused to quit when the chips were down.
Woodruff Boys Soccer Wins Third Region Title in Four Years
Woodruff boys’ soccer is turning into a powerhouse program, and the 2026 season saw the Wolverines win their third conference crown in four seasons with a number of heart-stopping victories along the way. Woodruff defeated Chapman twice on penalty kicks during region play and avenged an earlier loss to Greer Middle College with a tide-turning 4-0 win in the rematch. It has been a total effort for the Wolverines. Since their run began in 2023, Woodruff has outscored opponents 346-112, advanced to at least the second round of the playoffs in each of the past four seasons, had 28 all-region selections, three all-state selections, with Eric Perez becoming the first North-South All-Star in program history this season. The Wolverines finished 2026 with a 16-3 overall record.
Boys Track Wins Region Championship
The Woodruff boys’ track and field team culminated a successful season by winning the region championship for the first time since 2019. A complete team led by sprinters, jumpers, and throwers, the Wolverines were a tough opponent for all who competed against them. Speed, strength, and endurance were their trademark, and their accomplishments have set the program up for sustained success in the future.
Nathan McConnell Vaults into the Record Books
Woodruff junior Nathan McConnell has honed his craft as a pole vaulter and has etched himself as one of the premier vaulters in Woodruff history. McConnell finished as state runner-up in 2026, vaulting 12 feet 6 inches in the state meet to tie his career-high mark. His top vault ties him for the second-highest score in the event in school history and is just four inches off the all-time record of 12 feet 10 inches set in 1986. With one more season left to compete, Nathan will have even more opportunities to cement himself as an all-time track and field great at Woodruff High School.
