Half Pint

When we were little in the ’50s and early ’60s, Daddy and Mama took us to Rainbow Lake. We all shared cold watermelons on picnic tables under shady trees. We were exhausted from swimming, and the watermelons were refreshing.

One hot Saturday, Daddy brought home a pint of Pet vanilla ice cream. He cut it in half, and Doug and I loved it. I’ll never forget our treat.

It was hot back then, and our home and car were not air-conditioned. How did we survive the heat and humidity? The good news is, we were grateful for our ceiling fan. Daddy turned it on late at night, and Mama turned it off around seven in the morning.

The older and plumper I get, the worse summer seems. While melting, suffering and being miserable, there is still hope for the cool autumn ahead with every yellow leaf to fall or seen clinging to a thirsty tree.
