A Massachusetts jury deliberating the fate of Lindsay Clancy reported Tuesday that it was unable to reach a unanimous verdict in her closely watched murder trial.
Plymouth Superior Court Judge William Sullivan instructed the jurors to continue deliberating rather than declaring a mistrial.
The announcement came on the fourth day of deliberations. Jurors had spent approximately 17½ hours considering the case before informing the court Tuesday morning that they had reached an impasse.
Clancy, 36, is charged in connection with the January 2023 deaths of her three children, 5-year-old Cora, 3-year-old Dawson and 8-month-old Callan, at the family’s home in Duxbury, Massachusetts.
The trial has focused primarily on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for her actions.
Her defense attorneys contend that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis and could not understand or control her actions at the time. Prosecutors acknowledge that Clancy experienced mental health problems but argue that she understood right from wrong and acted deliberately.
Jurors heard testimony from more than 80 witnesses and reviewed hundreds of exhibits during the nearly six-week trial.
The jury may consider several possible verdicts, including first-degree murder, second-degree murder, manslaughter or not guilty because of a lack of criminal responsibility.
A first-degree murder conviction would carry a mandatory sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. If Clancy is found not guilty because she was not criminally responsible, prosecutors could ask the court to have her committed to a psychiatric facility.
If jurors remain unable to reach a unanimous decision, the judge could eventually declare a mistrial. Prosecutors would then have the option of trying the case again.
As of Tuesday afternoon, no verdict had been announced, and deliberations were continuing.
