WOODRUFF, S.C. — New Bethel Baptist Church in Woodruff celebrated an important milestone Sunday, Aug. 30, as members and guests gathered for the installation of the church’s new pastor, the Rev. Dr. Karras C. Cohen.
The special service brought together the New Bethel church family, visiting pastors, church leaders, family members, friends and guests for an afternoon of worship, fellowship and celebration.
The occasion marked more than the formal beginning of a pastorate. It was an opportunity for the congregation to welcome its new shepherd, honor the responsibility of pastoral leadership and look ahead to the ministry opportunities before them.
The Rev. Dr. Patrick Suber, pastor of Foster Chapel Baptist Church and moderator of the Tyger River Baptist Association, delivered the message for the occasion. His words offered encouragement to Cohen and the New Bethel congregation as they begin working together in ministry.
Pastoral leadership calls for wisdom, humility, dedication and a commitment to serving others. Likewise, a strong congregation supports its pastor while remaining committed to the mission and ministry of the church. The installation service reflected that spirit of partnership.
A Meaningful Moment of Installation
The Rev. Dr. James L. Hailstock, pastor of New Day Baptist Church, led the presentation portion of the service, including the laying on of hands by representatives of the Tyger River Baptist Association and the Presentation of Installation.
The laying on of hands provided a meaningful opportunity for ministers and association representatives to surround Cohen with support as he assumes his new responsibilities at New Bethel.
Several additional presentations highlighted different aspects of pastoral service.
The Rev. Gerry Spells of Lewis Chapel Baptist Church presented a Bible, representing the importance of Scripture in the pastor’s ministry.
The Rev. Dr. Walter Davis IV of Monks Grove Baptist Church presented a wallet, while the Rev. Mark Eison presented a hymnal. Michael Whitmire presented the keys, symbolizing the trust and responsibility accompanying Cohen’s new role.
Together, the presentations served as reminders of the many dimensions of pastoral ministry, from teaching and worship to stewardship, leadership and service.
Moving Forward Together
For New Bethel Baptist Church, the installation opens the door to new opportunities for ministry and continued growth. With Cohen now beginning his pastoral assignment, the congregation has an opportunity to build upon its history while looking toward the future.
A successful pastorate is strengthened when the pastor and congregation work together with a shared sense of purpose. Through worship, service, outreach and fellowship, New Bethel can continue making a meaningful difference in the lives of its members and the surrounding community.
The congregation extends sincere appreciation to the Tyger River Baptist Association, Foster Chapel Baptist Church, New Day Baptist Church, Lewis Chapel Baptist Church, Monks Grove Baptist Church, participating pastors and presenters, family members, friends and all guests who helped make the installation celebration memorable.
As Cohen begins serving New Bethel, the church family welcomes him with open hearts and looks forward to the work ahead.
A new pastor has been welcomed, a new chapter has begun and New Bethel Baptist Church moves forward together with purpose, hope and expectation.
