About the Wolverines

It is as simple as this for Woodruff: The Wolverines must win on Friday to guarantee themselves a spot in the playoffs. It is possible that Woodruff qualifies for the postseason even with a loss, but nothing can be left to chance.

The offense has continued to put up big numbers. Senior tight end MiCah McClintock had a career night last week against MVP, with 10 catches for 193 yards and three touchdowns. Connor Davis has thrown for 25 touchdowns and just two interceptions. Curtis Bell is also closing in on 900 receiving yards.

Defensively, there were improvements last week, especially against the run. The Wolverines held the Stars to fewer than 200 yards on the ground, though they were victimized through the air.

They will face the run-heavy Red Devils this week, but beware, because Clinton is all too willing to sneak in a few passes as well.

Woodruff must put together a complete effort on both sides of the ball this week, not just to ensure a playoff spot, but to restore confidence heading into the postseason.

About the Red Devils

It has been a season of attrition and adversity for Clinton. The Red Devils enter this week with a winning record despite battling through a crippling spate of injuries throughout the year.

Senior quarterback Owen Glenn leads the Red Devils’ run-heavy offense, and he has a number of talented tailbacks to hand the ball to, including Angelo Cromer, Bryland James, Rhett Gilliam and Camden Gregory. Gilliam returned last week after missing most of the season and is playing with a torn ACL in his knee.

Graydon Watkins is a talented two-way player, both at receiver and in the defensive backfield.

On defense, Clinton is led up front by Tristan Lee, Jace Patterson and Rylan Lawton. At linebacker, Gregory and Joshua Watts are the playmakers.

The Red Devils have also been prone to giving up points this season and will be tested by a potent Woodruff unit that continues to pour out points and yards despite the Wolverines’ defensive struggles in recent weeks.

Coach’s Corner with Brett Sloan

“The message (to our players) has been to control the things we can control. Play the next play.”

“We just need to play well in all phases of the game. Complementary football helps you to seize momentum. We need some good momentum right now.”

“First, they play a physical brand of football. They are very good at what they do. Their offense forces you to play assignment football. They are aggressive and really run to the football on defense. On defense, we have to do our job and play our key. On offense, we have to handle their pressure packages. We have to execute the passing game to loosen the box.”
