South Carolina Taxpayers Get More Time to File
South Carolina taxpayers are getting extra time this year to file their state income tax returns.
The South Carolina Department of Revenue (SCDOR) has announced that the filing deadline for 2025 individual state income tax returns has been automatically extended from April 15 to October 15, 2026.
Why the Extension?
The extension comes as state lawmakers work to update South Carolina’s tax laws to align with recent changes to the federal tax code.
Officials say the additional time is meant to give taxpayers flexibility while those updates are finalized.
No Action Required
Taxpayers do not need to file any forms or request an extension—it is automatically applied to all South Carolina individual income tax returns.
Important: This Does NOT Extend Payment Deadline
While the filing deadline has been pushed back, the deadline to pay taxes has not changed.
- Payments are still due by April 15, 2026
- Taxpayers should pay at least 90% of what they owe by that date to avoid penalties
Failing to pay on time could result in interest and penalties, even if the return itself is filed later.
What This Means for You
- If you owe money: Pay by April 15 to avoid penalties
- If you’re expecting a refund: You can file anytime before October 15
- If you haven’t filed yet: You now have additional time to make sure everything is accurate
- Federal returns are still due April 15th
