SOUTH CAROLINA — A statewide ban on outdoor burning is already showing measurable impact, according to the South Carolina Forestry Commission, which reports a significant drop in new wildfire ignitions since the restriction took effect Friday, April 17.

While April typically brings an increase in wildfire activity, including several large or complex fires already reported this month, officials say the number of new fires has declined notably as residents comply with the emergency order.

The Forestry Commission credited the public for taking the warnings seriously amid what officials describe as “very high fire danger” conditions stretching from the mountains to the coast. Persistent gusty winds, low relative humidity, and extremely dry vegetation continue to create a volatile environment where even small sparks can quickly escalate into dangerous wildfires.

Historically, April has been the most active and costly wildfire month in South Carolina, with dry fuels and shifting weather patterns increasing the likelihood of rapid fire spread.

Despite the recent improvement in ignition rates, officials emphasize that the threat remains high. Most wildfires reported in recent days have been attributed to human negligence, including unattended debris burns and improper disposal of smoking materials.

The Forestry Commission is urging continued caution and cooperation until weather conditions improve. Residents are also encouraged to share information about the burning ban to help prevent additional fires.
