WOODRUFF — National Day of Prayer will be observed locally as Woodruff First Baptist Church invites the community to a special evening of prayer on Thursday, May 7, at 6:00 p.m. at McKinney Park.
The annual observance, held on the first Thursday of May, calls on Americans to pause for prayer and reflection. Established by Congress in 1952 during the Korean War, the modern National Day of Prayer continues a long-standing tradition of national prayer dating back to 1775, when the Second Continental Congress issued a call for prayer. Each year, the President of the United States issues a proclamation encouraging citizens to participate.
Local organizers say the Woodruff gathering is an opportunity for unity across the community.
“Our country needs prayer. Our leaders need prayer. Our city and state need prayer. All of humanity needs prayer,” said Rev. Derrick Scurry, Chaplin for the City of Woodruff.
The gathering at McKinney Park will be open to the public and is expected to include guided prayer, moments of reflection, and opportunities for individuals to pray for the nation, local leaders, and the broader community.
Community members interested in assisting with the event are encouraged to contact Debbie Williams at 864-415-2086.
Organizers emphasize that the evening is designed to be inclusive and welcoming, offering a space for individuals, families, and churches across the area to come together in a shared moment of faith and reflection.
Residents are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and arrive early as the community joins together for this annual tradition.
