Registered Sex Offender Arrested in Spartanburg County ICAC Investigation

MOORE, S.C. — A registered sex offender is facing 10 charges after investigators said they discovered hundreds of files depicting child sexual abuse material during a search of a Moore residence.

The Spartanburg County Sheriff’s Office Internet Crimes Against Children Unit, with assistance from Homeland Security Investigations, arrested 61-year-old Alan Dale Smith following an investigation that began with CyberTips submitted by the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Investigators executed a search warrant Thursday, July 16, at a residence on Rexford Drive. According to the Sheriff’s Office, multiple digital storage devices were recovered during the search and were found to contain hundreds of files depicting child sexual abuse material.

Smith was arrested and charged with 10 counts of third-degree sexual exploitation of a minor, enhanced.

The Sheriff’s Office said the charges were enhanced under amendments to South Carolina’s sexual exploitation of a minor laws that took effect in May 2026. The enhanced charges were applied because Smith is a registered sex offender with prior qualifying convictions.

Smith was booked into the Spartanburg County Detention Facility and was being held on a $500,000 cash bond.

The South Carolina Attorney General’s Office will prosecute the case.

The charges against Smith are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
