Older ones, can you reach down to fasten your shoes and give yourself a pedicure? Do you talk to your friends about which brand and size of pee-pee pads or pull-ups are best? Does a mug make more sense now than your favorite cup and saucer?
Inventory what you are able to do well or with a little discomfort and be grateful. Farm out chores you hate or no longer can perform, like housekeeping, yard work, driving, shopping or medication management.
A young in-law once said, “Assisted living is a warehouse full of people waiting but dreading to die.”
Life has taught me a young sourpuss is a worse sourpuss in old age.
Young people, fussing at an elderly person only drives a wedge. You will be avoided because they need kindness, not correction.
One day, Lord willing, you young pups will be in need, and I pray in advance you will have a good attitude and not become negative tyrants and control freaks.
